Algorithms for Scheduling Problems
This edited book presents new results in the area of algorithm development for different types of scheduling problems. In eleven chapters, algorithms for single machine problems, flow-shop and job-shop scheduling problems (including their hybrid (flexible) variants), the resource-constrained project scheduling problem, scheduling problems in complex manufacturing systems and supply chains, and workflow scheduling problems are given. Tracing the origin of Arctic sea ice and freshwater by neodymium isotopes and rare earth elements
Neodymium (Nd) isotopes (expressed as εNd) and rare earth elements (REEs) in seawater have been successfully used to trace water mass mixing in the Arctic region [1,2,3]. However, the potential to trace the origin of drifting Arctic sea ice with εNd and REEs has not yet been directly explored. Freshwater originating
from various Siberian rivers is mixed and diluted prior to its advection to the central Arctic Ocean and the Fram Strait, thereby inhibiting an assessment of the individual contribution of the different rivers [1,2]. In contrast, sea ice may preserve the marine or riverine εNd and REE signatures from Siberian shelf waters while transported across the Arctic Ocean. This mechanism is demonstrated here for the first time by comparing εNd and REE signatures determined from unfiltered but essentially sediment-free sea ice with corresponding signatures expected for surface seawater in the formation region of the ice. Sea-ice
cores were recovered in the Eurasian Basin of the central Arctic Ocean in 2012. Based on satellite-derived
ice drift and concentration data, some of the sea-ice floes sampled formed east of Vilkitsky Strait and are
characterized by εNd values near -8 in agreement with the incorporation of radiogenic freshwater (εNd-
6) from the Yenisei and Ob rivers [4]. A second sea-ice source was located north of the Laptev Sea as reflected by εNd values near -11, which is consistent with mixed contributions of radiogenic waters from the Kara Sea and northward flowing highly unradiogenic freshwater (εNd< -15) of the Lena River [4]. These first data suggest that Nd isotopes can trace both the origin of drifting sea ice and of freshwater. The REE concentrations in the ice are depleted compared to those in Siberian shelf waters, indicating salt-associated
REE rejection during sea-ice formation.

The Hot and Energetic Universe: End points of stellar evolution
White dwarfs, neutron stars and stellar mass black holes are key laboratories
to study matter in most extreme conditions of gravity and magnetic field. The
unprecedented effective area of Athena+ will allow us to advance our
understanding of emission mechanisms and accretion physics over a wide range of
mass accretion rates, starting from lower and sub-luminous quiescent X-ray
binaries up to super-Eddington ultra-luminous sources. Athena+ will measure
stellar black hole spins in a much higher number of binaries than achievable
now, opening the possibility to study how spin varies with black hole history.
The high throughput and energy resolution of the X-IFU will be instrumental in
establishing how disc wind properties depend on accretion state, in determining
wind launching mechanism and in quantifying the impact of the wind induced mass
loss on binary evolution and environment. Triggers and high quality optical and
radio data originating from large wide field contemporaneous instruments will
provide essential complementary information on jet launching mechanisms and on
the physics of rotation powered pulsars, for instance. In addition, Athena+
will furnish multiple, independent measurements of the neutron star mass/radius
relation in a wide range of environments and conditions so as to constrain the

Pathways between Primary Production and Fisheries Yields of Large Marine Ecosystems
The shift in marine resource management from a compartmentalized approach of dealing with resources on a species basis to an approach based on management of spatially defined ecosystems requires an accurate accounting of energy flow. The flow of energy from primary production through the food web will ultimately limit upper trophic-level fishery yields. In this work, we examine the relationship between yield and several metrics including net primary production, chlorophyll concentration, particle-export ratio, and the ratio of secondary to primary production. We also evaluate the relationship between yield and two additional rate measures that describe the export of energy from the pelagic food web, particle export flux and mesozooplankton productivity. We found primary production is a poor predictor of global fishery yields for a sample of 52 large marine ecosystems. However, chlorophyll concentration, particle-export ratio, and the ratio of secondary to primary production were positively associated with yields. The latter two measures provide greater mechanistic insight into factors controlling fishery production than chlorophyll concentration alone. Particle export flux and mesozooplankton productivity were also significantly related to yield on a global basis. Collectively, our analyses suggest that factors related to the export of energy from pelagic food webs are critical to defining patterns of fishery yields. Such trophic patterns are associated with temperature and latitude and hence greater yields are associated with colder, high latitude ecosystems

Borexino : geo-neutrino measurement at Gran Sasso, Italy
Geo-neutrinos, electron anti-neutrinos produced in beta-decays of naturally occurring radioactive isotopes in the Earth, are a unique direct probe of our planet's interior. After a brief introduction of the geo-neutrinos' properties and of the main aims of their study, we discuss the features of a detector which has recently provided breakthrough achievements in the field, Borexino, a massive, calorimetric liquid scintillator detector installed at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory. With its unprecedented radiopurity levels achieved in the core of the detection medium, it is the only experiment in operation able to study in real time solar neutrino interactions in the challenging sub-MeV energy region. Its superior technical properties allowed Borexino also to provide a clean detection of terrestrial neutrinos. Therefore, the description of the characteristics of the detected geo-neutrino signal and of the corresponding geological implications are the main core of the discussion contained in this work
The SPIRITS Sample of Luminous Infrared Transients: Uncovering Hidden Supernovae and Dusty Stellar Outbursts in Nearby Galaxies
We present a systematic study of the most luminous (M IR [Vega magnitudes] brighter than −14) infrared (IR) transients discovered by the SPitzer InfraRed Intensive Transients Survey (SPIRITS) between 2014 and 2018 in nearby galaxies (D 12) show multiple, luminous IR outbursts over several years and have directly detected, massive progenitors in archival imaging. With analyses of extensive, multiwavelength follow-up, we suggest the following possible classifications: five obscured core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), two erupting massive stars, one luminous red nova, and one intermediate-luminosity red transient. We define a control sample of all optically discovered transients recovered in SPIRITS galaxies and satisfying the same selection criteria. The control sample consists of eight CCSNe and one Type Iax SN. We find that 7 of the 13 CCSNe in the SPIRITS sample have lower bounds on their extinction of 2 < A V < 8. We estimate a nominal fraction of CCSNe in nearby galaxies that are missed by optical surveys as high as (90% confidence). This study suggests that a significant fraction of CCSNe may be heavily obscured by dust and therefore undercounted in the census of nearby CCSNe from optical searches

This article is the second part of a review series dealing with cutaneous lesions on the head and face, which are frequently seen in daily practice by a dermatologic surgeon. Albiglutide and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (Harmony Outcomes): a double-blind, randomised placebo-controlled trial
Background:
Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists differ in chemical structure, duration of action, and in their effects on clinical outcomes. The cardiovascular effects of once-weekly albiglutide in type 2 diabetes are unknown. We aimed to determine the safety and efficacy of albiglutide in preventing cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke.
Methods:
We did a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial in 610 sites across 28 countries. We randomly assigned patients aged 40 years and older with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (at a 1:1 ratio) to groups that either received a subcutaneous injection of albiglutide (30–50 mg, based on glycaemic response and tolerability) or of a matched volume of placebo once a week, in addition to their standard care. Investigators used an interactive voice or web response system to obtain treatment assignment, and patients and all study investigators were masked to their treatment allocation. We hypothesised that albiglutide would be non-inferior to placebo for the primary outcome of the first occurrence of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke, which was assessed in the intention-to-treat population. If non-inferiority was confirmed by an upper limit of the 95% CI for a hazard ratio of less than 1·30, closed testing for superiority was prespecified. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02465515.
Findings:
Patients were screened between July 1, 2015, and Nov 24, 2016. 10 793 patients were screened and 9463 participants were enrolled and randomly assigned to groups: 4731 patients were assigned to receive albiglutide and 4732 patients to receive placebo. On Nov 8, 2017, it was determined that 611 primary endpoints and a median follow-up of at least 1·5 years had accrued, and participants returned for a final visit and discontinuation from study treatment; the last patient visit was on March 12, 2018. These 9463 patients, the intention-to-treat population, were evaluated for a median duration of 1·6 years and were assessed for the primary outcome. The primary composite outcome occurred in 338 (7%) of 4731 patients at an incidence rate of 4·6 events per 100 person-years in the albiglutide group and in 428 (9%) of 4732 patients at an incidence rate of 5·9 events per 100 person-years in the placebo group (hazard ratio 0·78, 95% CI 0·68–0·90), which indicated that albiglutide was superior to placebo (p<0·0001 for non-inferiority; p=0·0006 for superiority). The incidence of acute pancreatitis (ten patients in the albiglutide group and seven patients in the placebo group), pancreatic cancer (six patients in the albiglutide group and five patients in the placebo group), medullary thyroid carcinoma (zero patients in both groups), and other serious adverse events did not differ between the two groups. There were three (<1%) deaths in the placebo group that were assessed by investigators, who were masked to study drug assignment, to be treatment-related and two (<1%) deaths in the albiglutide group.
Interpretation:
In patients with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, albiglutide was superior to placebo with respect to major adverse cardiovascular events. Evidence-based glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists should therefore be considered as part of a comprehensive strategy to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with type 2 diabetes.
